Le Mirano: Notorious nightclub at the heart of Brussels

By: Carter McLellan – Date: August 15, 2021 – Updated: February 9, 2022

There are many anecdotes. Very Many. Anecdotes from the Mirano … There’s no end of them. Some I can tell you, some I can’t.” – (Carl de Moncharline, artistic director at Le Mirano, from 1990 to 1994) [1]

“[For a large payment] I will give you a picture on which then Prince Albert [II] jumps a 16 year old girl. Naked. Shot at the second floor of the Mirano Club 20 years ago. … Then I do have to leave Belgium. – (2001, Der Spiegel, ‘In the Network of Dossiers‘, quote of Jean-Michel Nihoul before the Dutroux trial.) Introduction

One of the notorious clubs at the heart of Brussels, Belgium, was Le Mirano. Originally a cinema, the location went through a number of transformations through the 1900s, but by 1980 is became a bustling club in the Brussels nightlife. While the place was quite popular, there were stories about sinister things going on there, not just involving drugs like cocaine, but child abuse. One witness stated that prominent persons came to participate in sordid cocaine fueled orgies, including members of the Belgian royal family. An investigation was opened in mid 1980s, following a drug overdose death, but despite massive evidence of a child abuse ring, only the drug related offenses were prosecuted.

On top of the terrible crimes that allegedly went on there, the murdered Juan Mendez reportedly claimed before his death that Le Mirano was the key to solving the Gang of Nijvel case, which remains unsolved to this day. The Gang of Nijvel case was closely related to the notorious Pinon dossier and the Pink Ballets affairs, which to a large extent involved members of the Cercle des Nations.

Below is a timeline summary of the history of Le Mirano, followed with a brief overview of the allegations of child abuse and blackmail from the investigation centered on Philippe Cryns and the testimonies of VM1 and X2. The last main section deals with ties to the Gang of Nijvel with some of the reported attendees of Le Mirano, in particular Baron Benoit de Bonvoisin, Madani Bouhouche and Jean Bultot.

Le Mirano timeline

Dates in “pink” specifically indicates relationship between Le Mirano the supposed owner Philippe Cryns and the testimonies of VM1 and X2.

  • 1912-1933: Grand Casino de Saint-Josse opened at no. 38 chausse de Louvain. Films would be screened by 1919. It was described as a “brasserie-cinema-party room.” The hall was a cafe-concert type, including a stage with a “U” shaped gallery above. In the front was a marquise topped with a lit image of a giraffe, which got its nickname “A la Girafe.” [3]
  • 1934: A la Girafe had ceased its activities in 1933, only to be superseded by a new establishment called the Mirano cinema in the following year. [4]
  • 1934-’42: At some point, one of the Belgian cinema tycoons, Georges Van Vlasselaer, came to own the Mirano, as well as one other in Ixelles and two in Schaerbeek, with all four on chaussee de Louvain. Van Vlasselaer completely renovated the cinema, which had a room and balcony with 600 seats, then the largest in the Saint-Josse. [5]
  • 1942: The Belgian modernist architect Rene Ajoux modified the entrance. [6]
  • 1942-1951: At some point, the buildings at Nos. 38 and 40 were demolished. However, Ajoux had the cinema rebuilt, in ’51. It was Ajoux who designed the neon lit funnel shaped entrance, topped with the sign “Cine Mirano.” [7]
  • 1951-1975: Le Mirano cinema would have showed films and made poster advertisements for them as well. [8]
  • 1969: Cercle des Nations was founded by Paul Vankerkhoven with Paul Vanden Boeynants and others. [9]
  • 1976: Le Mirano became an exclusive cinema where it apparently showed original films, as well as dubbed French versions, of the same films showed elsewhere in Brussels. This appears to have precipitated a “film crisis” of some sort. [10]
  • May 17, 1978: The last film is shown at Cine Mirano, after a “film crisis” had increased to a certain point. It would be closed for two years. [11] The place would remain closed for around two years.
  • 1980: The founders of Mirano Continental, Aldo Gigli and Paul Sterck arrived, they would set up a team and open up the next year. Gigli had traveled to New York and went to the notorious Studio 54, where he was influenced and inspired by the New York nightlife to start his own club in Brussels. [12] Curious coincidence, Studio 54 owners Steve Rubell and Ian Schrage were reported clients of shady lawyer Roy Cohn, who was said to have organized sex parties there. Another club likely related to this milieux was Le Club and the Plaza Hotel, where Cohn was said to have organized “blackmail parties” in the 1980s and where Trump organized sex parties in the 1990s.
  • 1981: The hall of Le Mirano was transformed into a discotheque theme, along with the name Mirano Continental, which held various events as a nightclub and would become one of the first to play house and techno music. The co-founder and creative director of Le Mirano was Aldo Gigli. Another co-founder and administrator was Paul Sterck. [13]
  • 1981-1983: Gang of Nijvel becomes active, only to disappear for nearly three years, from 1984-late 1985, suspiciously just after WNP head and Group G leader Paul Latinus died under a suspicious suicide. More on this later.
  • 1980s: “Victim Moeurs” 1 (VM1) came to work as a child prostitute for Philippe Cryns at Le Mirano, where he had to lure and drug other minors, to be abused in the private area of the club. Cryns worked and came to be a director at a cosmetics company, Laboratoire du Docteur Renaud. [14]
  • 1984: Jean-Pierre Mels was brought in as Managing Director at Le Mirano. With this position he was able to attract “a lot of chicks.” [15]
  • 1985: Cryns co-founded “NV Parc Savoy”, in Brussels, with men as Ado Blaton and Charly De Pauw, all members of the Cercle des Nations. The company’s purpose was to run bars and restaurants and to organize “cultural and social gatherings.” Parties were organized there and said to have been visited by de Bonvoisin, de Pauw, Blaton and Michel Nihoul, as well as the youths of Brussels nightlife. Parc Savoy would later be merged into “Codenat.” [16]
  • April 14, 1985: Jean-Jacques B., son-in-law of a high-ranking magistrate, died inside Le Mirano from a drug overdose, including consumption of cocaine, heroin, alcohol and other drugs. This would result in an investigation and judicial trial. There were rumors of sex and cocaine parties on the second floor and rumors of a transaction of footage made by Cryns with prominent individuals in compromising scenes. The Brussels youth were known to attend Le Mirano, many prominent individuals’ sons were said to have attended. However, the evidence of these sex crimes would never make it to the court and were never thoroughly checked out during the investigation. Cryns even admitted during the investigation that children brought a “special attraction” during the cocaine parties. [17]
  • Late 1985-1986: Victim-witness X2 testified, in the 1990s X-files, that she was taken to Le Mirano by her pimp Olivier Castiaux, where they met with Baron de Bonvoisin, Paul Bourlee and Francois Harq. Castiaux would later bring her back several times to the Mirano, but left on these occasions, after which the private parties ended in group sex with distribution of cocaine and minors present. X2 testified that de Bonvoisin, Bourlee, a Levi and members of the Belgian Royal family of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha were present. [18]
  • September 27 & November 9, 1985: The Gang of Nijvel struck for the last few times, which became increasingly more gruesome. The gang managed to narrowly escape on November 9, only to never be seen again, with an investigation already being obstructed in the first several years.
  • February-March 24, 1986: In the Mirano cocaine case, 13 defendants were tried before the Brussels Correctional Court, among them Philippe Cryns, Alexis Alewaeters, Sammy Pavel, Eric Verhaeghe de Naeyer, Stephane Devriendt and Jacques De Windt. Pavel had shipped the cocaine to Cryns in Belgium from Brazil. It was said that Cryns provided a Dutch connection. [19]
  • October 1986: By the end of the trial, Cryns got a three year prison sentence, Alewaeters with five years prison. Pavel got two years prison with postponement, Devriendt got three years with postponement and De Windt got eighteen months. [20]
  • 1986-2000: The improv league, created by Mels, held its tournaments in Le Mirano. It appears that in the 2000s, Le Mirano was closed for a major makeover. [21]
  • 1989-1990: Cryns must have left prison by these years.
  • 1990: Carl de Moncharline was brought into Mirano Continental as artistic director to takeover from “Etienne.” [22]
  • 1993-2007: Olivier Gosseries was the DJ at the Mirano. Gosseries had first been to Le Mirano inn 1986, at the age of 16. He met the first DJ at Le Mirano, Jean-Claude Maury. He claimed that all the rules of modern clubbing originated from Le Mirano. Described it as always avant-garde. [23]
  • 1994: Gigli and de Moncharline left their position at Mirano Continental. [24]
  • 1994-1995: Cryns worked at S&P Labs. At some point, Cryns and Nihoul were seen at the Namur lab MLS SPRL of Andre Verhoeft, who also managed S&P. Verhoeft and Cryns were said to have been linked to the “murder of Baccala.” Verhoeft allegedly frequented Le Mirano and Cryns and Nihoul were said to frequently organize “pink ballets” in Faulx, seemingly in the 1990s. [25]
  • 1996: Jean-Pierre Mels left his position as managing director at Le Mirano. [26]
  • February 16, 1997: At Commissioner Yves Zimmer’s office were Michel Bourlet, Marc Toussaint and VM1, who gave his testimony. [27]
  • Evening, February 18, 1997: VM1 called Toussaint saying that he was stopped in the street by two unknown men, who seemingly knew he had given testimony at Neufchateau. The two men demanded that VM1 immediately hand over the “photo,” but had never spoken about photos to Toussaint before the investigation. VM1 was given 48 hours to get them the “photos” and they give him a number. He was to call back in two days, to receive instructions, otherwise he would be dead in a week. Toussaint contacted Major Guissard, who ordered him to assemble a PV. The investigation ended up with Major Decraene of the CBO, and apparently the Gendarmerie was upset that one of their men, Toussaint, secretly met with Bourlet and police commissioner Zimmer. [28]
  • February 20, 1997: The SIE takes action, while research was being done by the 1KOS of the Brussels BOB, who grabbed the address corresponding to the number at Berangerstraat in Vorst. They set up VM1 to call on a tapped line. With the cops around him joking, one remarking that the address is probably a fake one of State Security. VM1 gets the signal to call when detectives see the mysterious “Olivier,” suspected of doing the dirty work for Cryns, enter the house at the address. When VM1 called to say he had the photos, to which Olivier proceeded to deny knowledge of anything, as if warned. A few days later, Toussaint inquired about the number, but it appeared to be disconnected. Toussaint also communicated with VM1 a few more times after against the will of his superiors. VM1 stated that the material had been safely hidden away. [29]
  • April 11, 1997: In the X-dossiers investigation, Luc Vergnon, who led the raid on X1’s home on orders of Jean-Claude Van Espen just the previous month, contacted Bernadette Paduart, who linked Cryns to Nihoul, as well as the owner of the labs Cryns worked at, Andre Verhoeft, to Le Mirano. She also stated that Cryns was the boss at Le Mirano and told this to Marc Bertrand. [30]
  • 1998: Verwilghen Committee looked into the investigation of Le Mirano and determined that evidence of sex offenses were not thoroughly investigated. [31]
  • 2000-2009: Lorenza Serra becomes artistic director and co-founds “Dirty Dancing.” Met Cosy Mozzy at La Glaciere. Serra once said: “We never asked ourselves what our predecessors had done. That would have paralyzed us, I think. [32]
  • October 14, 2001: Der Spiegel published an article on their interview of Michel Nihoul, who had been free in the middle of the Dutroux trial. Nihoul stated that King Albert II was on film, which he could acquire for a large payment, as a Prince at Le Mirano, where he abused a 16-year-old. [33]
  • 2003-2009: Renaud “Cosy Mozzy” / “Attari” became musical artist of Le Mirano and co-founder of “Dirty Dancing.” Helped Serra bring Dirty Dancing to Paul Sterck. In an interview, explained that Le Mirano had become a venue for live events, rather than a proper nightclub as it had been in the past. They would help Mirano to eventually upgrade their sound systems. [34]
  • 2003-2010: Arnaud Leclercq was “creature of bourgeois follies”. He was brought in by Jacqueline Kuzee. [35]
  • 2009-2015: First video inside Le Mirano appears on Youtube, in 2009, which featured a Dirty Dancing event. Several other videos would follow until 2015. Mirano Continental appeared to still be in operation, hosting parties with DJs that play hip hop, house and electro music. They had their “Dirty Dancing” event. Dancers and break dancers also appeared to feature. One might be curious to see in YouTube videos, a minor can be seen joining in some of the dancing with Les Twins. This is a bit odd with all the alcohol going around and other inappropriate things that may occur. The Facebook of “Mirano Continental” was inactive in the year 2015. [36]
  • 2010: Paul Sterck left his position at the Mirano. [37]
  • October 25, 2010: Mirano Brussels Facebook page was created. In a 2011 post, it claimed “Mirano is back!” [38]
  • June 2017: Mirano announced on Facebook that it would be closed until further notice, for reasons beyond its control. [39]
  • Around 2018?: At some point, Juan Kolgjini took over the Mirano. He vowed to reopen Le Mirano. [40]
  • 2019: In 2019, the Mirano Continental Facebook changed to Mirano Brussels. An Instagram page called Mirano Brussels, it was the continuation of Mirano Continental, having Le Mirano renovated, then began featuring numerous DJs. The page even presented itself as established in 1934. Presenting it is revived, refreshed and reestablished. It was capable of holding all kinds of events, with a large main room, a stage, a meeting room and café, as well as three levels of balconies. [41]
  • October 8, 2019:, Mirano Brussels posted a picture of Charles Kaisin as the host of his annual surrealist dinner at Le Mirano, before it officially opened its doors to the public in 2020. Kaisin’s surrealist dinner featured people in all kinds of strange clothing, a contortionist, nude dancers, candles, hints at black magic and some who wore masks. [42]
  • Early 2020: The Mirano Brussels began promoting itself on Instagram. It seemed to reference a membership with Art Blanc Group and We Give You More on Instagram. [43]
  • February 18, 2020: The Mirano was forced to close its doors due to a small roof fire. Meanwhile, the Covid-19 pandemic was breaking out in Europe, forcing them to remain closed. [44]
  • November 4, 2020: Mirano Brussels so far appears to have remained closed, although vows to return. Website claims to be open, but also says: “Website coming soon.” Their Facebook page has also been inactive since the fire.
  • August 30, 2021: Mirano Brussels Instagram posted on their Story that they were almost ready to open back up soon, having new lighting and sound systems set up. On Facebook, they announced the same thing, but that they would be open by October.
  • October 1, 2021: Mirano Brussels reopens Fridays and Saturdays, 9pm-5am, for the first time since the roof fire. New Covid measures are in-place through covidsafe.be.
  • November 26-29, 2021: Le Mirano shutdown a dirty dancing event once again, announced on social media. Some three hours later they announced a change of plans, saying “Join us for one last dance.” Three days later they announced their closure due to new covid measures in Brussels.
  • December 17, 2021: Due to lockdowns on “nonessential” businesses in Belgium, in order to prevent possible spread of Covid, a number of nightclubs have signed a letter pleading politicians to allow them to reopen by January 29, 2022. They have no issue only allowing those vaccinated and/or full recovered to attend, based on testing. These are clubs in Brussels, Flanders and Wallonia that have signed, pleading because they are seeing no income. [Source]
  • February 18, 2022: Nightclubs across Belgium have united together to reopen on this date. Mirano Brussels Facebook page had posted about it on February 9, ’22. [Source]

There appears to be an incredible lack of information surrounding Le Mirano and Philippe Cryns’ role in it. Also, to what extent Michel Nihoul was connected with the case. Some of this will be the focus on the following section.

Testimonies of child abuse, & “Pink Ballets”

The first testimony to be examined, in regards to child abuse at Le Mirano, would be that of Victime Moeurs 1 (VM1), described as the most secret victim-witness of all anonymous witnesses to testify at Neufchateau in the X-dossiers. It appears that as a child, VM1 ended up at a children’s home in Mont-Saint-Guibert, located east of Nijvel. From the ages nine to 13, seemingly in early 1970s, he was picked up from the home by a local juvenile judge who took him to abuse parties in villas around Brussels. VM1 would testify that he had witnessed multiple children being murdered and that uncooperative newly-initiated would often end up in car accidents. At some point, he began to work as a child prostitute for Philippe Cryns, in and around Le Mirano, located at the center of Brussels. [45]

How exactly VM1 came into contact with Cryns and to what extent Cryns was involved at Le Mirano, remains a mystery. It has remained a mystery from where Cryns got all of his money. In the early 1980s, he was the director at a cosmetics company, Laboratoire Dr Renaud, which appears to have been founded in the 1940s-1950s. Cryns was born on May 28, 1946, after WWII and Nazi occupation of Belgium. In the first half of the 1980s, Cryns would have been around 34-39 years-old. Before the scandal broke out at Le Mirano, in 1985, Cryns co-founded Parc Savoy, with men as Ado Blaton and Charly De Pauw, which had the purpose of running bars and restaurants and organizing social and cultural gathers. Parties were organized there and said to have been visited by de Bonvoisin, de Pauw, Blaton and Michel Nihoul, as well as the youths of Brussels nightlife. Parc Savoy would later be merged to “codenat.” At some point, Cryns became a member of the Cercle des Nations, located at Parc Savoy, of people as Paul Vankerkhoven and Paul Vanden Boeynants, De Pauw, Blaton and de Bonvoisin, where he gained a reputation for not only supplying cocaine, but also organizing sex parties involving minors. At Le Mirano, VM1 was very clear about his role for Cryns:

“I had to pick up children and get them drunk or give them drugs, then take ’em to the private area, where they were abused.” [46]

After the scandal that broke out at Le Mirano, VM1 went on to become a gangster, well known in the Brussels underworld. He committed several armed robberies and came to be known by the suspicious Yves Zimmer, who understood that “VM1 acted involuntarily as a sex object and at a later age began to play an active, ‘logistical’ role in the child prostitution network.” After the Dutroux affair broke out in 1996, Zimmer sought out VM1, only to find out that he had become a tipster for the gendarmerie through Marc Toussaint. On February 16, 1997, at Commissioner Yves Zimmer’s office with Michel Bourlet, Marc Toussaint present, VM1 gave his testimony. Two days later, VM1 was stopped by two men, who appeared to know of his testimony and demanded that he hand over photographs, which VM1 seemingly had never spoken about. The two men gave him a number to calls within two days, under the threat of death. In the following days, Toussaint got the number to be traced to an address and set up a taped call. When a mysterious “Olivier” arrived, who was suspected of having done the dirty work for Cryns, VM1 called to arrange for the transaction of the photos, only for Olivier to franticly claim to have no knowledge whatsoever of anything, as if he had been warned. VM1 apparently kept the photos and stashed them away. That is how the VM1 dossier ended. [47]

The investigation that ensued following the death of Jacques B. would have uncovered corroborative information pertaining to the testimony of VM1. Cryns was not only found to have organized cocaine parties together with Alexis Alewaeters, at Le Mirano, but that he was also a pedophile. His partner Alewaeters was known as an organizer of “special sex parties and worked as a clerk at the law firm Cadreco of Annie Bouty and Michel Nihoul. In the Mirano case court hearing, it was revealed that Cryns had picked up boys at the notorious Fontainas Square. According to Deputy Talon of the Crown Prosecution Service, Cryns had made confessions that children also provided “special attractions” at the cocaine parties. Le Mirano was known to be part of the circle of upper-Brussels younger generations nightlife, along with the clubs Circus and Parc Savoy, which were allegedly attended by the sons and daughters of businessmen associated with Paul Vanden Boeynants. [48] At some point, during the course of the investigation, tapes were confiscated which allegedly showed Cryns’ clients having sex with children. Yet, the Judge Claire De Gryse never viewed them, “because everyone assured me,” she said, “that nothing was on there that would even shock a capuchin.” [49]

The second victim-witness to testify about Le Mirano in the X-dossiers was X2, a police officer, who had been working on an aspect of the Dutroux investigation. She had a history of child abuse and upon hearing details of X1, eventually decided to testify herself. Although spared from the extreme sadomasochistic abuse endured by X1, she had evidently been abused in the same network as X1 and seemed to be handled in a similar way, as she was in a different ring. In the mid-1980s, X2 became the mistress of a high magistrate in Brussels, identified as a certain Karel. He escalated things by increasing sexual requirements and he was abusive, similar to how Tony was towards X1. Then he began to take her to parties where she wore a wig. Parties took place in an apartment seemingly in Brussels, as well as in the Netherlands. Parties took place in Knokke, where X1 had been earliest in the Network during the ’70s. X2 identified some of the main perpetrators identified by X1. In September 1984, following rumors around X2’s relationship with Karel, she was sent to Nijvel where she would meet Olivier Castiaux. X2 became Castiaux’s mistress while pursuing her relationship with Karel. [50]

Castiaux was a bailiff of the Justice Department of Belgium, a reporter and spokesman of the judicial district of Nivelles. In the mid-late ’80s, Castiaux would have been around the age of 31-36. Eventually Castiaux would act as her pimp and bring her to parties with other minors. According to X2’s testimony, Castiaux brought her to Le Mirano, along with Paul Bourlee, Jean-Francois Harcq and Baron Benoit de Bonvoisin, where apparently nothing happened. However, later on Castiaux took X2 back to Le Mirano, but this time left her there. On these occasions private parties took place, which culminated in group sex with minors present and distribution of cocaine. The orgy was initiated by older women and they seemed interested in girls, instead of boys. As stated in the X-dossiers, one of the women “masturbated X2 and sodomized her with a dildo.” In X2’s testimony, she identified a certain Jewish man, someone named Levi, who ejaculated onto her followed by his wife spreading it around. [51]

X2 was taken several other times to Le Mirano for end of the year parties between 1985-1986, but apparently by the mysterious Karel. She went 5-6 times, on each occasion were orgies with minors between the ages 12-15, made available from 3:00-4:00, and distribution of cocaine. Usually present were “about ten children – 25-30 adults including 5-6 women aged 50 and 3-4 girls aged 18-20”. The same modus operandi took place, the orgy was initiated by older women, one of whom abused X2 together with that Levi. The prominent individuals named by X2 as having been present at Le Mirano orgies were de Bonvoisin, Levi, Bourlee and even Belgian royalty, Princes Philippe and Laurent, but who were never active and only watched while masturbation until ejaculation. The rest were described as “strangers and strangers”. Not exactly clear is a potential third Philippe named by X2, supposedly indicating French for Prince Alexandre. Nevertheless, after these occasions, X2 was apparently brought back to the Jewish man Levi. While much more could be discussed here about the ties in the child abuse networks, the ties to the Gang of Nijvel case also need to be addressed. [52]

From the nightclub to the Gang of Nijvel

Shortly before his death on January 7, 1986, Juan Mendez is said to have pinpointed Le Mirano as they key to solving the unsolved Gang of Nijvel case. [53] In the same year, Madani Bouhouche would have been arrested on suspicions of murdering Mendez, but would eventually not be convicted. At the time of his death, Mendez had been investigating who was responsible for stealing a large private gun collection of his and eventually he primarily was suspecting Bouhouche. In the year preceding the murder of Mendez, a certain Jules Montel was murdered on August 11, 1985, shot several times in the head by killers not interested in taking his money. It turned out that Montel had been in possession of one of the guns of Mendez, for some reason. Montel was a a professional gambler, small-time criminal and an informant to a number of police services. Around the time of his death, the magistrate Claude Leroy had wanted Montel to testify about his role as an informant regarding the Gang of Nijvel. [54] Leroy was a visitor of the nightclubs Les Atrebates 1975-1983 and its successor The Dolo 1987-1996, where Michel Nihoul and others went and where allegations of sex parties with minors were rife. Victim witnesses X1 and Nathalie Waeterschooot recognized Les Atrebates and identified Michel Nihoul. Nathalie W. and X2 were familiar with The Dolo. As mentioned earlier, X2 had been taken to Le Mirano on several occasions in the 1985-1986 period. X2 also alleged that Claude Leroy had been one of the abusers at events in the Netherlands, together with others she saw at Le Mirano orgies, such as Baron de Bonvoisin, Paul Bourlee, the mysterious Karel and Levi including among them the omnipresent lawyer Jean-Paul Dumont.

In the morning of January 7, 1986, Bouhouche met with Mendez, then following the death of Mendez he was found later that evening with Mendez’s now widow, which led to his arrest. Mendez had been shot to death with 9mm hollow point bullets, which had been known to be used by Bouhouche. According to two ballistics reports it was Bouhouche’s gun that fired the bullets found in the head and chest of Mendez. But Bouhouche then provided a false alibi and had an extremely suspicious lawyer, Jean-Paul Dumont, who came up with a fraudulent ballistics report, written by a certain Claude Dery, that completely contradicted the previous two. According to one source, [55] Bouhouche, Robert Beyer and Christian Amory had been making plans to assassinate Dery for some unknown reason. Dery had known Bouhouche quite well. Dery was a former member of SDRA8 of NATO’s Operation Gladio, an agent for the Public Intelligence Office (PIO), a member of the Practical Shooting Association and a member of Templar orders. These Templar knight orders included Confrerie des Hospitaliers de Notre-Dame d’Aulne and Milice de Jesus Christ. [56] At the Practical Shooting Association, Bouhouche was a leading figure alongside other members as Jean Bultot and Bob Louvigny. Bultot organized practical shooting events, which included the prominent theme ‘warehouse panic,’ apparently put into action with the Gang of Nijvel. [57] At the shooting events participants wore Nazi emblems and shirts of Soldier of Fortune. The Confrerie des Hospitaliers also included Jean-Marie Bougerol, head of the PIO and also a member of the SDRA8 like Dery.

Juan Mendez

Juan Mendez was born in 1952 and became fascinated with guns coming to own many rifles and pistols, including explosives. He became an arms merchant at Fabrique National (FN). The predecessor of Mendez’s position, Carlos Davilla del Pielago, was a Peruvian who fled Belgium after it was discovered that he worked for the CIA and was involved in illegal arms and drug trades. Mendez became involved Iran-Contra, he claimed against his wishes. Weeks before his death, Mendez had been interrogated about his connection with Douglas Stowell, a wealthy American businessman apparently working for or with the CIA in Iran-Contra, in relation to an investigation into illegal arms trade to Honduras and Nicaragua. Stowell was arrested by French police, who believed he had worked on behalf of the Contras in Nicaragua. Mendez told family and friends that he was convinced the arms supplied by FN and destined for Nicaragua, were really sent to Iran. Mendez would have supposedly resisted these arms shipments. [58]

Since the 1970s, Mendez became associated with the fascist underground, his main connection being Madani Bouhouche. Later as a member of the Prisons Practical Pistol Club, he would be linked to its founder Jean Bultot, who mainly recruited fascist friends from the police and prison guards, as well as Bouhouche, Alain Weykamp and Bob Louvigny, who happened to be the private detective for Dr. Andre Pinon. In the 1980s, Mendez was a reported attendee of the Jonathan Club of Paul “Pepe” Derijcke, a friend of Michel Nihoul, where prostitutes were used to blackmail customers. Other reported attendees in addition to Mendez were Bouhouche, Bultot, Francis Dossogne, Lucien Otte, Jean-Francis Calmette, Raymond Lippens and Robert Darville. [59] Furthermore, a reliable witness claimed to have seen Mendez, Bouhouche and Jean Bultot together dining at the Villa Rose spanish restaurant in 1985. [60]

As described by ISGP, beginning in 1979, Mendez had been involved with a plan of Bouhouche to extort a number of warehouses through terrorist bombings. Multiple explosives would be found in Mendez’s backyard. Robert Beyer (BOB), Christian Amory (BOB officer crucial in getting security plans of the warehouses) and Rene Tchang Wei Ling (brother of an important BOB officer) were involved in this plan also. Jean Bultot has been named also. This plan never went through as Bouhouche was arrested in 1986 for the murder on Mendez.” However, this group is strongly suspected of being somehow involved with the Gang of Nijvel.

In addition to the above facts, shortly before his death, Mendez told family and friends that he had been invited by Bouhouche to become a member of a clandestine organization, which at that point had been working on political categorization of opponents to be used during and after a coup. Mendez, like Beyer, declined the invitation. During interrogations of Bouhouche after the murder of Mendez, he admitted that recruiting Mendez was part of an assignment given to him by the WNP leadership and that there was a political motive behind the planned attacks. Part of Mendez’s admission test would have been his role in the “brewery affair.” [61]

Madani Bouhouche, probably in 1980s.

An alleged visitor of Le Mirano was Bouhouche, who according to X2 would have also visited The Dolo. According to X1, Bouhouche was an abusive driver who took her to Roger Boas ASCO factory, where extreme child abuse and murders on film allegedly took place. Abusers at ASCO named by X1 included Baron de Bonvoisin, Paul Vanden Boeynants, Jean-Paul Dumont, Melchior Wathelet, Michel Vander Elst, Michel Nihoul, Annie Bouty, Tony Van Den Bogaert and Gendarme officers. It has been highly suspected that Bouhouche was a member of “Group G.” It certainly does appear that the clandestine organization of which Bouhouche was apparently only a member and the plots of terrorism and a coup had something to do with this Group G. This was a “Nazi-inspired parallel secret organization within the gendarmerie,” as a stated by Hugo Gijsels. This was part of a wider agenda to infiltrate and subvert the Belgian state, stemming from the paramilitary organization Front de la Jeunesse (FJ). The FJ has been discussed in previous articles and its successor was the WNP, which Bouhouche is said to have identified as the group that gave him the assignment to recruit Mendez into the clandestine organization. According to Amory, there were three levels within the organization, the assignment givers, the middlemen and the executioners, of which Bouhouche would have been a middleman. Bouhouche himself claimed that his role had not been very important, only to recruit and gather intelligence. Bouhouche was a reported instructor of paramilitary training camps in the Ardennes of the FJ. Bouhouche was also friends with alleged Group G member Frank Eaton, was close to Rene Mayerus and possibly tied to Jean-Francis Calmette.

As a BOB Gendarme officer, Bouhouche would have worked under the auspices of the National Bureau for Drugs (NBD). In 1981, Bouhouche and Beyer were transferred by Guy Goffinon after it was discovered that they had bugged an office of their colleagues. Goffinon and Herman Vernaillen would have investigated the NBD and in doing so be subject to assassination attempts, in October 1981, reportedly linked to Jean-Francois Buslik and his good friend Bouhouche. It would also be said by Martial Lekeu that these assassination attempts were carried out by Group G, which had been in operation since 1975. In 1981, Bouhouche and Buslik were involved in one of two armed robberies on tons of gold and other precious items loaded on a transport vehicle. While Bouhouche was convicted in 1995, Buslik had left Belgium. Rumors existed that Buslik was protected by US intelligence and even though he was extradited to Belgium in 2000, convicted for life, he was eventually somehow released within three weeks.

In 1983, Bouhouche and Beyer would leave the Gendarmerie and steal a whole database, which they tried to sell to VdB and Philippe Moureaux. In April 1983, they founded the Agence Recherche Investigation (ARI), a private detective agency said to have been a sub-contractor for Bob Louvigny‘s BDRI. It has never been explained how ARI got its dozens of storage places and apartments, computers, cars and weapons with just a few thousand dollars. In 1988, Beyer would be arrested and reveal some of the dealing between himself, Bouhouche, Amory and Rene Tchang, who were also arrested. That year Bouhouche was caught trying to breakout out of jail with help from his FJ/WNP friends. Beyer and Amory were released in August and Bouhouche in November. In September 1989, Beyer and Bouhouche were arrested again for having shot two Libyan diamond dealers, one of whom died, in Antwerp during a failed attempt to enforce a ransom for a third party. Bouhouche would be convicted in 1995, only to be released on parole in September 2000, having served 11 of his 20-year sentence. Remaining in contact with his fascist friends, he moved with his wife to the French Pyrenees to live off a simple remote farm near the city of Foix. In November 2005, Bouhouche was beheaded while trying to trim a tree with a chainsaw as a clump of wood flew off. The Belgian justice department found out by “coincidence” two months later and sent detectives to his house, but apparently nothing of interest was found.

Jean Bultot

As described above, Jean Bultot was apparently quite close to Madani Bouhouche and his plan for an long-term operation to terrorize and extort a number of warehouses, which would have also involved Christian Amory, Robert Beyer, Rene Tchang Wei Ling and the murdered Juan Mendez. According to one witness, Mendez, Bouhouche and Bultot were spotted together dining at the Spanish Villa Rosa restaurant in Brussels, in 1985. At some point, Bultot allegedly had some connection to wife of the earlier mentioned Claude Leroy, the Les Atrebates and the Dolo visitor who had wanted Jules Montel to testify about the Bende van Nijvel. Bultot founded the Prisons Practical Pistol Club, which mainly recruited his fellow fascist friends, police and prison guards, including Bouhouche, Mendez, Boby Louvigny and Alain Weykamp. Additionally, Bultot was a reported member of the Practical Shooting Association, together with prominent member Bouhouche and Louvigny and PIO member Claude Dery. Another practical shooting organization involving Bultot was the Triton Club. In February 1984, Bultot gave a speech at the Triton club, where he organized a shooting competition. According to ISGP, this speech was on a piece of paper, which Bultot’s girlfriend Claude Falkenberg had written on and which was later found in fragments in the Golf GTI ditched by the Bende. The patrons for the event of Bultot at the Triton Club were Cecile Goor, for whose ministry Falkenberg worked and a former member of the CEPIC, secretary of state Pierre Mainil, also former CEPIC member, and the Cultural Department of the US Embassy in Brussels. Also in February 1984, Bultot gave a demonstration in the use of Kevlar in car doors to civil servants, law enforcement officers and intelligence agents. Coincidentally, traces of Kevlar were found in the doors of one of the ditched Bende cars. Yet another seemingly bizarre fact, is that inspectors going through the house of Falkenberg found in her address book the phone number of Dr. Andre Pinon, whose private detective was none other than Louvigny and formed the center of the Pinon affair.

Bultot filmed in the jam at the Jonathan Club.

Based primarily on the witness testimony at Villa Rosa, it is reasonable to suspect that Bultot was a member of Bouhouche’s clandestine organization, which apparently took orders from the WNP/FJ, such as the assignment to recruit Mendez and probably Beyer, both of whom declined. Christian Amory certainly would have been a member. Bultot was also quite close to Group G, just as Bouhouche. One of Bultot’s friends was said to have been Francis Dossogne, the head of the Front de la Jeunesse (FJ) and leader of Group G. Bultot, Dossogne, Bouhouche and Mendez were reported visitors of the Jonathan Club, located in Sint-Gillis, of Pierre-Paul “Pepe” De Rycke , who is said to have been good friends of Bultot and the fellow blackmailer Jean-Michel Nihoul. Visitors have been described as extreme-right militants, soldiers and police officers who regularly came with weapons, other visitors including Jean-Francis Calmette, Lucien Ott, Raymond Lippens, Bultot friend Frederic Godfroid and even Frans Reyniers, who attended Les Atrebates and The Dolo where Nihoul was prominently a member. The ladies at the Jonathan would be forced to prostitute themselves and get their clients intoxicated. “Special evenings” were regularly organized, including “Rock ‘n Roll dans la confiture,’ where clients and hostesses bathed together almost naked in red berry jam. VDB once said “I don’t peddle in the jam!” Extensive filming took place at the Jonathan of these events, which De Rycke would use for blackmail. A number of photographs from the Jonathan appeared in a Paris-Las Vegas porn magazine published by Charles Dortant, who happened to be a close friend of Leon Degrelle, who was an important early influence on Vanden Boeynants (VDB) and would appear together in an Opus Dei dossier. Bultot is also said to have gone to a club attended by Nihoul and the Haemers gang, Coco Beach of “M.C.D.”, a former girlfriend of Patrick Haemers who dated De Rycke. The club where Nihoul is said to have gone, but denied it, was Le Mirano, where Bultot, Bouhouche, Robert Beyer and Patrick Haemers and his father Achielle are said to have gone as well. It may be recalled that Juan Mendez claimed that Le Mirano was the key to solving the Gang of Nijvel. Patrick Haemers kidnapped Paul Vanden Boeynants in 1989 for a ransom, having returned to Belgium by Brazil. Patrick claimed that he kidnapped VDB for a mysterious “organization” of which his lawyer Michel Vander Elst was his contact. Vander Elst was named by X1 as a sadistic abuser alongside VdB, de Bonvoisin and the Lippens brothers, which is one of the reasons that the kidnapping is suspected to have been staged. Vander Elst and his father, a lawyer and member of the Grand Orient Lodge de France, were lawyer for Przedborksi’s “Nebula.” In a Haemers Report, it is claimed that Eric Haemers and possibly Achille Haemers were members of a “Lodge” led by a certain “Jakian.” Eric Haemers was reportedly affraid to testify about it.

Baron Benoit de Bonvoisin

According to the testimony of victim-witness X2, Baron Benoit de Bonvoisin was one of the perpetrators at cocaine a sex fueled orgies involving minors at Le Mirano, from late 1985-1986. The crimes of the Gang of Nijvel took place between 1982-1985. Since the late 1950s to early 1960s, de Bonvoisin had been in contact with Belgian politician Paul Vanden Boeynants, Parliament since 1948, Minister of the Middle-Classes ’58-’61, PSC/CPV party alliance Chairman from 1961-1966 and Prime Minister from 1966-1968. Benoit’s father Pierre, an initial attendee of Bilderberg, knew Vanden Boeynants since the 1940s, when they were both involved in the Union of European Federalist (UEF), part of Jozef Retinger’s European Movement. In 1969, Vanden Boeynants was appointed the honorary title of Minister of State by King Baudouin. The Cercle des Nations was also set up by Paul Vankerkhoven in that same year, together with VdB, BdB and other allies. A number of other key organization were set up in this including, the Ligue Internationale de la Liberte (LIL), which was the Belgian branch of the World Anti-Communist League (WACL), the Academie Europeene des Sciences Politiques (AESP) and the Mouvement d’Action pour l’Union de l’Europe (MAUE), which was the Belgian branch of the Paneuropa Union (PEU) of Otto von Habsburg. Through the 1970s and 1980s, de Bonvoisin became involved with these organization and went on to become a key Belgian representative at the secretive Le Cercle, said to have been the umbrella organization of the “Fascist International.” De Bonvoisin has been associated with, or even a member of Opus Dei, which officially began their work in 1965, in Belgium. It has been said that de Bonvoisin was a good friend of synarchist-La Cagoule linked Jean-Eugene Violet, as well as SDECE head Alexander de Marenches who released Violet from French intelligence.

In 1971, BdB and VdB set up the Nouvel Europe Magazine (NEM), which was published by CIDEP of de Bonvoisin and edited by Emile Lecerf. It began to make several references to a coup, having the result that in the following year a number of fascist militants began to form NEM-clubs where they could meet each other. Vanden Boeynants, de Bonvoisin and Vankerkhoven founded the CEPIC in 1972, the year when VdB became Minister of Defense, until 1979. Also the year 1972 is when planning allegedly began to destablize Belgium in order to bring in a stronger government that could more effectively counter “KGB subversion” of labor unions and left-wing political parties. In 1973, an aborted coup reportedly took place in Belgium called “l’Ordre Blue” which was closely linked to the Sniffer place scandals. The 1973 aborted coup allegedly involved Vanden Boeynants, de Bonvoisin and Jean-Marie Bougerol, among others. By 1973, the fascists meeting at the NEM-clubs founded their own paramilitary organization called the Front de la Jeuneese (FJ), which came to be headed by Francis Dossogne, a paid advisor of de Bonvoisin. It would later be exposed in 1981 by Belgian State Security that BdB was a key funder of FJ through the CEPIC and his PDG company. In 1974, Vanden Boeynants and de Bonvoisin set up the Public Information Office (PIO), which served as a private Military Intelligence group, which spied on journalists with a negative attitude toward to VDB Gang. De Bonvoisin helped secure SDRA8 member Jean-Marie Bougerol’s position as head of the PIO. It is said that FJ head Dossogne took orders from PIO head Bougerol. From 1974-1975, de Bonvoisin, Lecerf anf Albert Lambert helped set up the Parti des Forces Nouvelles (PFN), which served as the political front of FJ. As mentioned above, Jean Bultot’s father was a candidate for the PFN. Around late 1975 – early 1976, Baron de Bonvoinsin hosted a meeting of leading fascists in Europe at his castle in Maizeret. Attendees included FJ head Dossogne and representatives of the Italian MSI and Ordine Nouvo, the French branch of the PFN, the British National Front, and the Spanish Fuerza Nueva.

In the period of 1972-1975, Leon Francois (Group G) founded the Gendarmerie’s National Bureau for Drugs (NBD) with support from Vanden Boeynants and the CIA. According to Group G suspected and Diane Group member Martial Lekeu, an attempt to destabilize Belgium had been in the works since 1975. Lekeu stated that during “the gatherings of the Front a plan was developed to destabilize Belgium and prepare it for a non-democratic regime. This plan consisted of two parts: a cell political terrorism and a cell gangsterism.” Group G (Gendarmerie) and Group M (Military) were to conduct a series of terrorist attacks, which would somehow result in the CEPIC crowd becoming all-powerful. The use of false flag-type operation were part of the plot. In 1976, Gendarme Roger Tratsaert stated that there was a silent right wing coup in preparation in Belgium, which was centered around NEM and (ex-) officers from the military. Lekeu claimed that Group G was behind the 1981 theft from a Diana Group’s barracks, in which Bouhouche was strongly implicated. Lekeu also claimed that Group G was behind the failed assassination attemps on Vernaillen and Goffinon, who investigated the NBD for corruption and drug trafficking. In 1985, Freddy Troch would have already dug into the connection between Group G and Bouhouche. When Bouhouche was in the Gendarmerie (BOB), he worked under the NBD. With the NBD having come under intense suspicion of corruption and drug trafficking, VdB himself even became a primary suspect. Vernaillen and Goffinon, who would survive assassination attempts in 1981 (Bouhouche and Buslik implicated) would be told that they couldn’t touch their suspects because they were protected by Vanden Boeynants and de Bonvoisin. In 1981, the CEPIC was shutdown after the exposure by State Security, nevertheless de Bonvoisin would appear at a 1982 meeting of Le Cercle, just before the Gang of Nijvel apparently started to commit robberies. Lekeu says he got out of Group G when they began to organize the terrorist attacks of the Gang of Nijvel.

It was in 1981 that Dossogne gave Paul Latinus (PIO agent, FJ member and Group G leader) the permission to form Westland New Post (WNP). The PIO would have also eventually merged with the European Institute of Management (EIM), which was said to to have been joined by Bougerol and have been a private intelligence operation. So in this way, the EIM would have directed the WNP just as the PIO had done with FJ. Potentially precipitating the Gang of Nijvel’s disappearance between 1984-1985 was the strange suicide of Latinus in 1984, who is said to have been in the possession of the Pinon dossier at the time. The year 1984 is also when the judge died in Le Mirano, causing a major bungled investigation. The Pinon files was related to the Pink Ballets scandals dealing with Eurosystem Hospitalier, Fortunato Israel, Lydia Montaricourt and Maud Sarr. The WNP reportedly disbanded following Latinus death and the FJ disbanded in 1983. So for the attacks that happened in 1985, there must have been some organization still in existence at that time.

In late 1985 – early 1986, Guy Dussart was reportedly approached at the Wavrse BOB by two senior high nobility Opus Dei members, who explained that at least 9 important members of Opus Dei together with several officers and generals of the Gendarmerie and Army were working to destabalize Belgium in order to transfer all power to King Baudouin, who died about 7-8 years later. Dussart mentioned the same named as Herman Vernaillen got from Leon Finne (murdered by Gang of Nijvel in 1985) claimed that some of the same figures involved in the abort 1973 coup were involved 1980s coup. Several meetings of the conspirators were said to have taken place, from the 1970s-1980s, at the Opus Dei owned Castle Dongelberg, which was pointed out by X2 as a location where child abuse took place and also mentioned by Nathalie Waeterschoot. In 1980, Leon Finne stated to Herman Vernaillen, the investigator of NBD and VdB, that a silent fascist coup was on going in Belgium, which involved key players as Paul Vanden Boeynants and Fernand Beaurir. The aborted 1973 coup reportedly involved Vanden Boeynants, de Bonvoisin. VdB and BdB appeared in an gendarme dossier on Opus Dei, while Beaurir is said to have been am Opus Dei member. All the talk of coups certainly seemed related to Opus Dei and apparently part of Operation Gladio’s “strategy of tension,” which involved the CIA, MI6 and NATO. On a last note, Juan Mendez is said to have spoken about a Belgian version of the Italian P2 lodge, which had a branch in Belgium called P7, which was linked to Opus Dei and involved members of the AESP, which in-turn involved a number of above mentioned suspects linked to Le Cercle. What is also certain is that Philippe Cryns of Le Mirano was a member of the suspicious Cercle des Nations, together with many suspicious individuals.

Conclusion

It is fair to say that Juan Mendez may have been telling the truth in regards to the Le Mirano-Gang of Nijvel connection, which is frighteningly close to accusations of organized child abuse networks with official protection. It also seems apparent that the Cercle des Nations was a key group associated with Le Mirano and involving key suspects in the Gang of Nijvel case and the reports of coups. Furthermore, Le Mirano also seemed important to understand the wide network of associations of Michel Nihoul. A lot more in either direction could be pursued further, but it certainly appears that the Gang of Nijvel case must also be analyzed.
